Hurricane Irma was definitely impactful to the state of Florida and many are still without power. I made it out to one of my favorite shooting locations last night and found a little erosion and seaweed, but otherwise the sunset and sand are still gorgeous…just like these lovely expectant mama’s and papa’s!

Tampa | Clearwater Fine Art Photography ~
Have you ever wondered what the difference is between Fine Art photography and just a good old photograph? I wondered this too, even after becoming a professional photographer. For a while I thought it was because I had a really expensive camera, some pretty dresses and knew some nice locations. I even knew how to remove blemishes and make someone look 10 pounds lighter in Photoshop. But it didn’t feel like “Fine Art”. So I took more classes…in photography, in Photoshop, in “seeing light”. I bought more dresses, more props and more education. And then, finally, after shooting 1000s of photographs, and studying 1000s more, I understood. First you must start with an overall decent photograph: good light, nicely styled wardrobe, correct composition, the right white balance and exposure, framing and posing. And then you transform it. You don’t just randomly play in Photoshop (although I’ve learned lots by doing just that!). You create something new from your original canvas – you take your image to the next level by bringing your vision to life with your digital paintbrush. You “add value” and create art. Since a picture paints a 1000 words let me show you a few Before/After images to illustrate my point.

Girl in dunes on beachI think I was successful in using my new skills and translating them to beach sessions! Thrilled with how this image turned out! I love the softness and her innocence. She is one of a set of 4 year old twins. Beautiful little girls!

I am avid about continuing my photography education and it never hurts when adorable children and lush forests are involved! I was blessed to attend a children’s fine art photography workshop held by renowned child photographer, Cass Vanhorn (Noelle Mirabella Photography) in beautiful Victoria, BC last weekend. I can’t wait to put my new skills to the test and translate them to our colorful tropical environment here in Tampa and Clearwater! XO

I know you may be thinking, “ugh, I’m so tired, bloated, uncomfortable…” and you might be wondering ‘how in the world can I even consider having my photograph taken’? But how can you NOT document this time in your life? Your body won’t always be capable of creating new life. You and your baby are miracles and you will soon be bringing this new life into the world. Perhaps it’s your first, or maybe your last…either way it’s important to celebrate the power of the feminine body, and it isn’t only about the end result.  Looking AND FEELING radiant in a stunning gown (or not!), having your hair and makeup perfect and being captured in a beautiful environment is empowering and will be something you will remember and value for the rest of your life. Through fine art portraiture, future generations will be able to experience that moment as though they were there, almost living that time with you!

I love being a newborn photographer in Tampa and Clearwater Florida! Miss Avaleigh was one of the sweetest, sleepiest little babies and was just a delight to work with. When your little one arrives and you decide that you NEED cuddly, sleepy newborn photos; the artistic skill of the photographer (and of course price) are probably the first things that pop into your mind when searching for a baby photographer in Tampa and Clearwater, FL.  But those aren’t the only considerations you should be pondering!  In addition to shopping based on price, cute pictures or studio location; please ask your potential photographer how they learned their craft and what they know about safely posing your baby!  Do they use an assistant to spot baby or do they work alone?  How do they soothe baby when she cries (because she most likely will)?  Newborn photography is one of those things you don’t just “dabble” in!  It takes special skill, knowledge and abilities that a generalist photographer just won’t know unless they have been specifically educated in the genre.

I fell in love with newborn photography from the moment I assisted on my first newborn shoot, but I also immediately knew this wasn’t something I could just watch a video about or take an online workshop to gain the necessary skills to ensure the comfort and safety of your precious new life.  I researched and invested in hands on, individualized training from some of the best newborn photographers in the world.  I like to joke that I spent more on my newborn training than I did on my BA and graduate studies combined (I have more hours towards my “Baby PhD” than my formal degrees even required) and I continue to invest in education.

Regardless who you consider and ultimately choose, make sure that your photographer has studied with specialists in the field, that they understand the stresses on a baby’s body and that they how to pose safely and comfortably.  This should be a joyful, stress free experience that you can treasure and enter into without any concerns that your baby isn’t in the most competent of hands.

When photographing newborn babies there is always going to be a certain amount of post processing required to rid baby of newborn acne, skin flakes, redness etc.  But sometimes I just like to use Photoshop as my canvas to create something altogether new and different!  The following images were used to create a whimsical photo that baby’s family will cherish for generations!  I photographed this hibiscus flower in my front yard in Clearwater, FL and subsequently shot baby on beanbag in my home studio in anticipation of merging the two afterwards.
